Want to know more about female fertility?

For many women, tracking your period can be challenging and inconsistent, so a lot of us feel uncertain about our reproductive health, whether trying to conceive now, or planning pregnancy later.

Your menstruation experience is deeply individual, with the exact combination of timing and symptoms almost bespoke to every woman. And even though the 28-day cycle has been popularised for almost a century, studies show less than one in five women fit that typical rhythm.

Female fertility testing helps you understand your situation better. It explores hormone levels, ovulation patterns, ovarian reserve, and any underlying conditions that might be making things more difficult than they need to be, especially for those women who may have PCOS, endometriosis or other conditions.

Dr Maree Lee will look at your complete picture, not just one test in isolation, and explain what it means before recommending your next move.

Female fertility insights

What is female fertility testing?

Irregular or absent ovulation, also known as anovulation, remains one of the most common and most treatable causes of female infertility.

Hormone bloodwork, taken at specific points, can show whether and when ovulation is happening, with further information coming from ultrasounds of the ovaries and uterus. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS, now named Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), is one of the most common conditions affecting female fertility and a leading cause of irregular ovulation.

According to the International Evidence Based Guideline, diagnosis requires two of three features: irregular ovulation or anovulation, signs of excess androgen hormones, or polycystic ovarian appearance. AMH levels can now be used as an alternative to ultrasound when assessing polycystic ovarian appearance, making diagnosis more accessible.

Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes are also considered, often linked to previous infection, endometriosis or pelvic surgery. Endometriosis can affect fertility both directly, through scarring and inflammation, and indirectly, sometimes affecting egg quality and quantity.

Step 1: Your first consultation

Consider your first appointment with Dr Maree Lee a get-to-know you conversation in a warm setting. After learning about you and your story, she will ask about your period and anything you have noticed yourself.

Step 2: The investigation

Depending on timing and history, your testing may begin with bloodwork at a specific point in your cycle, an ultrasound, or both. Dr Maree will explain exactly what each test is looking for and why the timing is important.

Step 3: Clear results

Whether the results point to PCOS, an ovulation issue, or nothing of immediate concern, Dr Maree will never just hand you a print out. She’ll walk you through what it actually means for you and answer all your questions.

Step 4: A plan made for you

From here, options might include ovulation induction, lifestyle factors worth discussing, or further investigation. You decide what happens next, fully informed, and guided by a specialist.

Step 5: Support doesn't stop at the door

If something comes up after your appointment, a new symptom or just a question that didn’t occur to you at the time, Dr Maree is dedicated to helping you find the information you need to feel in control.

Your cycle is trying to tell you something

Irregular, heavy or painful periods, unpredictable ovulation or a PCOS diagnosis you have never fully understood are all reasons to come in, not reasons to hold back or give up.

FAQs: Female Fertility

Fertility treatments come with a lot of questions, and at Dr Maree’s practice, we are all about delivering the answers. Here are some of the most common queries we receive.

No referral is needed to book female fertility testing with Dr Maree Lee, but a referral can help with Medicare rebates. If your GP has already run any tests or scans, bringing those along can be a helpful starting point.

Cycles vary naturally from person to person, but consistently irregular, very long, very short or absent cycles are worth investigating, especially if you are trying to conceive. There is no harm in checking, even if it turns out to be nothing.

PCOS or PMOS as it is now known, often affects ovulation, but it does not mean you can’t conceive. Many women with PCOS go on to have successful pregnancies, sometimes with support like ovulation induction, sometimes without any treatment at all.

Though ovulation tracking can offer useful clues, apps and predictor kits are not always precise, particularly if your cycle is irregular. Hormone testing usually adds helpful information alongside whatever you have already been tracking.

A normal result is good news, and it does not necessarily mean further investigation is needed straight away. Dr Maree will talk you through what it means for your specific situation and timeline, taking into account your full story.

Not necessarily. Treatment depends on your symptoms, your fertility goals and what the endometriosis is actually doing. Surgery is one option among several, not an automatic next step.
