IVF and fertility treatment insights

What is IVF?

IVF, or in vitro fertilisation, involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, retrieving them, fertilising them in a laboratory and transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus.

More than 10 million babies have been born worldwide since the first successful cycle in 1978.

It is not always suitable for everyone, and it is not the only option. Depending on history, age and fertility testing results, less invasive treatments may be worth considering, such as ovulation induction or intrauterine insemination for female fertility factors, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for male fertility factors.

Where IVF is the preferred path, the approach has evolved. Advances in embryo freezing technology and preimplantation genetic testing have improved outcomes and reduced miscarriage risk. Emerging research into the uterine environment, such as endometrial receptivity and immune regulation, is also refining how transfers are timed and guiding treatment after implantation failure or pregnancy loss.

Outcomes are shaped by age, ovarian reserve, sperm quality and uterine health. Understanding your individual picture is the foundation for a more effective path.

What to expect from the IVF process

Are you considering IVF in Sydney with Dr Maree Lee? Knowing how it works and what to expect at each step can help you feel more comfortable as you move forward.

Step 1: Your first consultation

Your first appointment with Dr Maree is a conversation. She will take the time to understand your full history, your circumstances and what you are hoping for, before anything else is discussed.

Step 2: Investigation and testing

Dr Maree will recommend the appropriate investigations for both partners where relevant. This typically includes blood tests, ultrasound and semen analysis, and may include more specialised testing depending on your history.

Step 3: Understanding your results

Once your results are in, Dr Maree will talk you through them in plain language. You will understand exactly what they mean, what they suggest about your fertility and what options are available to you. You will have every opportunity to ask questions, and the doctor will answer them openly.

Step 4: Building your plan

Your treatment plan is built around your specific results, your goals and your preferences. Dr Maree will explain every option, including the realistic likelihood of success, so you can make an informed decision about how to proceed.

Step 5: YOUR Treatment

Whether your plan involves ovulation induction, IUI, IVF or a more complex treatment, Dr Maree will manage your process closely and keep you informed throughout. You will never be left wondering what is happening or why.

Step 6: Ongoing support

Fertility treatment rarely follows a straight line. Whatever your outcome, Dr Maree will review, reassess and continue working with you on what comes next. Know that support doesn’t stop when a cycle ends.

FAQs:
IVF and fertility treatments

Fertility treatments come with a lot of questions, and at Dr Maree’s practice, we are all about delivering the answers. Here are some of the most common queries we receive.

No referral is needed. You are welcome to book directly. To receive a Medicare rebate for your appointment or fertility treatment you will require a referral from you GP or another specialist.

IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is a treatment where an egg and sperm are combined in a laboratory to create an embryo, which is then transferred to the uterus to establish a pregnancy. It is one of the most widely used fertility treatments.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is a specialised laboratory procedure performed alongside standard IVF. While conventional IVF mixes eggs and sperm in a culture dish for natural fertilisation, ICSI uses a tiny needle to inject a single, carefully selected sperm directly into the centre of a mature egg.

If you have any previous fertility investigations, blood tests, ultrasound results or medical records, bring those along as they can give Dr Maree useful insights. If you have a partner, it is worth them attending too, fertility assessment looks at both sides from the beginning.

That is exactly the question your consultation will help answer. Dr Maree will not recommend IVF without a thorough understanding of your situation and that understanding begins with that first conversation. There may be other treatments worth exploring before or instead of IVF, and she will be honest with you about what is most likely to help.

Dr Maree Lee offers private fertility services through Genea and public fertility services through Westmead Fertility Centre. She consults in Bella Vista, Westmead and Wahroonga, conveniently located for patients across the broader Sydney area.

This varies significantly from person to person and depends on a range of factors including age, diagnosis and how your body responds to treatment. Dr Maree will give you a realistic picture based on your individual circumstances rather than a generic answer.

In a fresh transfer, an embryo is transferred in the same cycle as egg collection. In a frozen transfer, embryos are stored and transferred in a subsequent cycle. Dr Maree will discuss which approach is most appropriate for your situation and explain the reasoning clearly.

Yes. Unexplained infertility is one of the most common diagnoses in reproductive medicine and one Dr Maree has strong experience managing. She will investigate thoroughly before recommending a treatment approach.

The cost of IVF varies depending on your individual treatment plan and any Medicare rebates you are eligible for. Dr Maree will provide a clear breakdown of expected costs before you begin treatment.
