General gynaecology insights

What does general gynaecology cover?

General gynaecology addresses the conditions that shape daily life without necessarily affecting fertility. Several have seen recent change in how they are diagnosed and treated.

Abnormal or heavy bleeding is one of the most common reasons women seek care, with causes ranging from fibroids and polyps to adenomyosis and hormonal factors. Treatment now begins with the least invasive option that suits the cause, from oral medications to the hormonal IUD that can cut menstrual blood loss by up to 80%, through to procedures like endometrial ablation. Hysterectomy is no longer the default.

Endometriosis and adenomyosis, where endometrial tissue grows where it should not, share a long history of diagnostic delay. Endometriosis has taken an average of around seven years to diagnose, and both were once confirmed only through gynaecological surgery. Better imaging now means many cases are recognised on transvaginal ultrasound.

Cervical screening has changed just as significantly. Since July 2022, everyone eligible in Australia can choose clinician-collected or self-collection, both equally accurate at detecting HPV. Screening is recommended every five years from age 25 to 74, underpinning Australia’s path to eliminating cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer rates have more than halved in Australia since the screening program began.

Self-collection now makes up more than 40% of cervical screening tests in Australia.

Australia is on track to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035.

Adenomyosis is most PREVaLeNT in women aged 40 to 55.

FAQs: General Gynaecology

General gynaecology comes with a lot of questions, and at Dr Maree’s practice, we are all about delivering the answers. Here are some of the most common queries we receive.

If you would like to claim a Medicare rebate on your appointment or eligible treatments, you will need a referral from your GP or another specialist.

If your periods are heavy enough to disrupt daily life, or painful beyond what simple pain relief manages, it is worth investigating rather than dealing with it each month. These symptoms are common but not something you have to put up with.

In many cases, yes. Both conditions can often now be identified on a transvaginal ultrasound, though some still need further investigation to confirm.

Yes. Both methods are equally effective at detecting HPV, the virus responsible for almost all cervical cancers. Dr Maree can talk you through which option suits you.

An abnormal result doesn’t necessarily mean cancer. It usually means further investigation, such as a colposcopy, is needed to understand what’s happening, and Dr Maree will explain every step.

There’s a wide range of what’s normal, but very heavy bleeding, painful periods disrupting daily life or bleeding between periods are worth discussing, even if you’ve been told it’s ‘just how your body is’.
